He hung up the phone and smiled. “Howdy partner,” he said, affecting a pretty good southwestern accent.

I didn’t like the tone of his voice with whoever it was on the other end of his phone. I wanted to ask him who it was, but I worried that I’d be stepping over the implicit… limits of whatever it was we were doing. Like asking him that question would be girlfriend territory… which I most certainly was not. What am I, then?

“Howdy, buckaroo,” I said, mustering up some level of levity. “What’s that there little thingamajig ya’s holding up to your ear? Some sort of fancy co-mun-i-cation device?” I felt myself orbiting around the question I really wanted to ask: who the fuck was on the other end of the phone?
